وَقالَتand she said حِذارِbeware القَومَthe people إِنَّfor indeed صُدورَهُمtheir bosoms
وَعَينَيand the two eyes of أَبيmy father حِقداًwith hatred عَلَيكَtoward you تَفورُseethe
And she said, “Beware the people, for their bosoms
She warned me, "Beware of the people, their chests
And my father's eyes seethe with hatred for you.”
Are filled with hatred for you, overflowing."
فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her قَدmay يُؤخَذُbe caught الظَبيُّthe gazelle غِرَّةًunawares
وَتَصطادُand catches شاةُa ewe الكَلبِthe dog وَهُوَthough he is عَقورُfierce and biting
So I said to her, “A gazelle may be caught unawares,
I said to her, "The young gazelle can be caught off guard
And a ewe may catch the dog, though he is fierce.”
And the sheep hunted by the ungrateful dog."
إِذاwhen مُتُّI die ياO قَوميmy people فَلاthen do not تَدفِنونَّنيbury me (emphatic)
فَأَfor; most- (word prefix) بغَضُhateful (word continuation) جيرانٍneighbors إِلَيَّto me قُبورُgraves
When I die, O my people, do not bury me:
When I die, O my people, do not bury me,
For graves are the neighbors most hateful to me.
For I hate having close neighbors in graves.
وَلَكِنbut دَعونيleave me ياO بَنيَّmy sons تَعُسُّنيseek me out

But leave me, O my sons, to be sought out
Rather, O my sons, leave wretched me
By foxes in their haunts, and vultures.
To foxes in their dens and eagles in their nests.
