أَلاAh! رُبَّmany a خَمّارٍwine-seller طَرَقتُI visited by night بِسُدفَةٍin darkness
مِنَof اللَيلِthe night مُرتاداًseeking لِنُدمانِيَfor my drinking companions الخَمراwine
Ah, many a wine-seller have I visited in the darkness
Alas, how many a tavern I’ve stopped at by night,
of night, seeking wine for my drinking companions.
Seeking revelry, to dispel my cares!
فَأَنهَلتُهُso I gave him a drink خَمراًwine وَأَحلِفُand I swear إِنَّهاthat it is
طِلاءٌboiled grape must حَلالٌlawful كَيso that يُحَمِّلَنيhe makes me bear الوِزراthe sin
So I gave him wine to drink, swearing that it was
I served him wine, swearing it was licit,
lawful boiled grape must, so he might lay the sin on me.
A lawful potion, though it would burden me with sin.
أَعُلَّفَO ʿUllaf إِنَّindeed الصَقرَthe falcon لَيسَis not بِمُدلِجٍa night traveler
وَلَكِنَّهُand yet he بِاللَيلِat night مُتَّخِذٌtaking وَكراa nest
O ʿUllaf, the falcon does not travel by night,
In truth the falcon rests not in his nest at night,
but at night he makes himself a nest,
But rather he makes his abode in a cleft,
وَمُفتَرِشٌand spreading as bedding بَينَbetween الجَناحَينِthe two wings سَلحَهُhis dung
إِذَاwhen اللَيلُthe night أَلقىcasts فَوقَover خُرطومِهِhis snout كِسراa fold
and spreads his dung as bedding between his wings,
Spreading his wings there when night casts
when night casts a fold over his snout.
Its darkness over his beak’s tip.
فَإِنso if يَكُhe is صَقراًa falcon بَعدَafter لَيلَةِthe night of أُمِّهِhis mother
وَلَيلَةِand the night of جَحّافٍJaḥḥāf فَأُفٍّthen fie! لَهُon him صَقراas a falcon
If he is still a falcon after his mother's night
If after his mother’s night and a night
and Jaḥḥāf's night, then fie on him as a falcon!
Of wailing he’s still a falcon, shame on him!
تَشُدُّshe grips tightly بِكَفَّيهاwith both her hands عَلىonto جِذلِthe trunk of أَيرِهِhis cock
إِذاwhenever هِيَshe خافَتfears مِنfrom مَطِيَّتِهاher mount نَفراbolting
She grips the trunk of his cock with both her hands
With both hands she clutches his pliant nape
whenever she fears her mount may bolt.
When her riding beast shies from his boldness.
