Will you not question the dwelling that does not speak?

And though it gives no answer, I shall surely question it:

How many years since then, or when were its people last here?

And will the days of youth return, and its unadorned maiden?

I resolved to utter a truthful statement,

And despite the enemies' opposition, I shall surely say it.

I saw al-Walid, son of Yazid, blessed,

Strong-shouldered in the affairs of the caliphate.

The lamp of kingship shone above his brow,

The morning his midwives called to one another, proclaiming success.

He takes little food into his belly, save a morsel to sustain him,

Of game now and then, as a falcon eats it.

Well nurtured, though some people suppose that he is

A brother of barren wastes, pale and lean of body.

    Large at the shoulder-joints, slender-waisted,

Like a Yemeni sword-blade, with receding temples and a well-formed head.

As though the silken garments—and these are his clothes—

Were draped over stems of basil; may his petitioner prosper!

You see his sword: its scabbard-tip does not reach mid-shin,

Indeed not, though its suspension-straps are long.

As though the full moon's radiance entered his bedding

When his wives face him beneath the coverlet.

When his washerwomen bring him roast meat at dawn.

And two shins like two papyrus reeds, nourished

In Wadi al-Qura by a river whose rivulets creep along.

You see the spiny-tailed lizard—if the lizard fears nothing else—

Hissing at it haughtily and striving to rival its height.

And may al-Mamdur never cease to be well-watered and lush,

And may the upper and lower reaches of its ravine receive rain.
