Ah, my people, alas for love and remembrance,

And an eye with Umm Jahdar as the mote in its pupil!

For my eye has never seen the like of my heart, which has not flown away,

Nor ribs like those above it, still unshattered.

Lavender grew willingly for her, and she was watered

In her homelands by bright clouds pouring rain.

And I am of Qays, and Qays are the summits,

When its horsemen ride in armor:

The armies of the Commander of the Faithful, through which

The bracelet-wearing marzban’s head is set straight.

It has indeed increased my confidence in myself that I,

When asked, 'Where is the chief?' have not hung back.
