The daughter of coquetry sits with us; fastened
The daughter of fortune sits with us clinging
are its bonds to the cores of lovesick hearts.
Her necklace to hearts that wildly yearn

And her love, the longing she conceals, was revealed
And reveals what her fervent love conceals
by pupils drowned in streaming tears.
My soul drowning in pouring tears

The tears ran their watery course; then they checked them
My tears flowed like water, so I stemmed their tide
with the jujube-berry fingertips of their tender hands.
With soft palm-tips gently pressed to eyes

And love returned greetings from her eyes
And returned love's greetings from her eyes
with a wakeful gaze in the semblance of one asleep.
With a waking glance in a dreamer's reverie
أَناI إِبنُson of أَبيAbu (father of) سَلمىSalma وَجَدِّيَand my grandfather ظالِمٌZalim

I am the son of Abu Salma, and my grandfather is Zalim.
I am the son of Abi Salma, my grandsire an oppressor
And my mother is chaste, of pure non-Arab lineage.
And my mother a mare stolen by foreigners
أَلَيسَis not...? غُلامٌa youth بَينَbetween كِسرىKisra وَظالِمٍand Zalim

Is not a youth between Kisra and Zalim
Am I not a lad of the noblest stock
the noblest of those upon whom amulets were hung?
With talismans tied and fortune's beams
لَوif أَنَّthat جَميعَall النّاسِthe people كانواthey were بِتَلعَةٍin a ravine
وَجِئتُand I came بِجَدّيَwith my grandfather ظالِمٍZalim وَإِبنِand the son of ظالِمِZalim
If all the people were in a ravine,
If all men were of common birth
and I came with my grandfather Zalim and Zalim's son,
And I came with my grandsire an oppressor and son of an oppressor
ظَلَّتremained رِقابُthe necks of النّاسِthe people خاضِعَةًsubmissive لَناto us

the people's necks would remain bowed to us,
The people's necks would bow low to us
prostrate, with their skulls upon our feet.
Prostrate at our feet and kissing the earth
