O our neighbor, calamities indeed befall

us, and strike some who feel secure.

O our neighbor, I am not departing this morning,

but shall remain as long as ʿAsib remains.

So if you ask me whether I have endured, I am indeed

    patient under time's vicissitudes, steadfast.

There passed, foretelling the severing of the cord with Umm Jahdar,

gazelles and birds cawing of parting.

I looked but read no omen; she did, and it was made clear

to her by the birds before me—and the wise are wise.

So she said, 'It is forbidden that we be seen after this

together, unless a stranger comes to visit.'

O our neighbor, patience! For many a dead man

is mourned by hearts torn apart with grief.
