أَلاAh! لَهَفيmy grief عَلىfor المَلِكِthe king المُرَجّىon whom hopes are set
غَداةَthe morning أَصابَهُstruck him القَدَرُfate المُتاحُappointed
Ah, my grief for the king on whom hopes were set,
Alas! My longing for the awaited king
The morning his appointed fate struck him.
The morning fate befell him.
أَلاAh! أَبكيI weep for الوَليدَal-Walid فَتىthe young man of قُرَيشٍQuraysh
وَأَسمَحَهاand their most generous إِذاwhen عُدَّare counted السِماحُthe generous
Ah, I weep for al-Walid, the young man of Quraysh,
Alas! I weep for Al-Walid, the noble Qurayshi,
And their most generous, when generous men are counted;
Their most generous when generosity is counted.
وإِجبَرَهاand their greatest healer لِذيfor one possessing عَظمٍa bone مَهِيضٍbroken anew
إِذاwhen ضَنَّتwithheld بِدَرَّتِهاtheir flow of milk اللِقاحُthe milch camels
And their greatest healer for one with a shattered bone,
He who helps the great when they are down
When the milch camels withheld their milk.
When their resin drips its sap.
لَقَدindeed فَعَلَتcommitted بَنوthe sons of مَروانَMarwan فِعلاًan act
وَأَمراًand a deed مايَسوغُdoes not go down بِهِbecause of it القَراحُpure water
The sons of Marwan have indeed committed an act,
The Marwanids have surely done a deed
And a deed that makes even pure water hard to swallow.
No decent person would approve.
فَظَلَّso he remained كَأَنَّهُas though he were أَسَدٌa lion عَقيرٌstricken
تُنَشَّرُare splintered فيin مَناكِبِهِhis shoulders الرِماحُthe spears
So he lay like a stricken lion,
So he remained like an unmilked lion
With spears splintered in his shoulders.
With spears bristling on his shoulders.
فَهَلthen is there لَكُمfor you all إِلىtoward أَمرٍa course رَشيدٍwise
فَتَصطَلِحواso you may reconcile فَفيfor in ذَاكُمthat (addressing you all) صَلاحُwell-being
Will you, then, turn toward a wise course
Is there a prudent course for you
And make peace? For in that lies well-being.
To make peace? In that is your success.
فَمالُكُمso what ails you all إِلىtoward جَرَعِswallowing المَناياdeaths
وَأَسيافٌwhile swords بِأَيديكُمin your hands رَواحُswinging to and fro
Why, then, turn to swallowing death,
Yet you are bent on the cup of death
While swords swing to and fro in your hands?
With swords in hand, ever ready.
تَناكَرَتِhave grown strange المَناياdeaths كُلَّevery يَومٍday
مُلَملَمَةٌmassed together لَهاthey have رَهَجٌa dust-cloud مُباحُunrestrained
Deaths grow stranger every day,
Death takes all, each day
Massed together, their dust-cloud unrestrained.
Ravenous, permitted to indulge.
سَأَبكيI shall weep ماas long as بَكىwept جَزَعاًin anguish وَشَوقاًand longing
حَمامٌdoves عِندَnear مَكَّةَMecca مُستَباحُexposed to slaughter
I shall weep as long as one cries in anguish and longing—
I will weep as a grieving, yearning dove weeps
A dove near Mecca, exposed to slaughter.
At Mecca's wide open sanctuary.
Qasiyy

Beware, beware lest I rescue Qasiyy—
Beware! Beware! Of being callous
Battalions that dawn cannot tell apart.
On mornings that make no distinctions.
