منwho أَودَعplaced الراحَwine والأَقاحَand daisies فمَكyour mouth
ومنand who أَعارlent الصَباحthe dawn مُبتَسمَكyour smile
Who placed wine and daisies in your mouth?
You who stored tenderness and passion in me
And who lent the dawn your smile?
And lent your smiling morning to me
أَصبحَhas become منwhoever قدalready رآكhas seen you ملتثماًveiled
يتيهreels bewildered سُكراًin drunkenness فكيفso what of منone who لَثمَكkissed you
Whoever has seen you veiled is now
Whoever saw you frowning
reeling drunk—what, then, of one who kissed you?
Wandered drunk with love, so what of one you kissed
لَوif أَنصفتكdid you justice الحسانُthe beauties قاطبةًall together
أَصبحتَyou would become مولىًa master وأَصبحَتand they would become خَدمَكyour servants
If all the beauties did you justice,
If all beauty did you justice
you would be their master, and they your servants.
You would be lord and your servants abound
قالواthey said حَكىresembled فرقَكyour hair’s parting الصَباحُthe dawn وَلَوand if
حُكِّمتُI were made judge فيهِof it أَوطأتُهI would lay it beneath قَدَمَكyour foot
They said dawn resembled your hair’s parting; and if
They say dawn parted you, but even if
I were made judge of it, I would lay it beneath your foot.
I judged it, I would trample dawn under your feet
ياO مقسِماًone who has sworn أَنto يُذيبَنيmelt me كلَفاًwith passionate love
حسبُكenough for you أَبررتَyou have fulfilled بالجَفاthrough coldness قَسمَكyour oath
O you who swore to melt me with passionate love,
O you who vowed to melt me away in yearning
enough! Through coldness you have fulfilled your oath.
Enough that with your coldness you fulfilled your vow
وأَنتand you ياO طرفَهhis eye السَقيمَailing أَماwill you not
تكفُّcease عنfrom ظُلمwronging غيرother than منone who ظَلَمَكwronged you
And you, O his ailing eye, will you not
And you, O sickly eyelid, will you not
cease wronging one who has not wronged you?
Stop wronging others besides those you have wronged
سلبتنيyou robbed me of صَبريmy patience الجَميلَbeautiful وَماand it did not
كفاكَsuffice you حتّىuntil كسوتَنيyou clothed me in سَقَمَكyour sickness
You robbed me of my beautiful patience, and that did not
You robbed me of my beautiful patience, and still
suffice you until you clothed me in your sickness.
That was not enough, so you clothed me in your sickness
