What sin has he committed in loving you—

A lovestruck man who has not obtained what he desires from you?

Parting has brought him overwhelming sorrow

Through your coldness—what, I wonder, brought it on?

    من رأَى شَيئاً عَجيباً أَعجبَه

    His admiration for you is nothing strange;

Whoever sees something wondrous is charmed by it.

Do not blame him if he is lost in love with you,

And yearns with longing, and reveals his suffering.

How sweet is passionate longing in loving you!

And my torment for you—how sweet it is!

O dwellers of al-Khayf, what harm would it do you

If you renewed ties with the one whose bond you severed?

A man distraught with love, betrayed by patience; and since

Your caravans went far away, it has not come near him.

Whenever a gleam flashed, it stirred his longing,

And when a breeze blew, it enraptured him.

Since separation drove him far from your abode,

Not for a single day has time made his drink palatable.

And when his eye sought slumber,

Longing for you shook him, and he awoke.

And in the eastern part of the protected grounds of Darij,

Is a full moon of beauty, whose likeness the full moon bears.

He set the inward depths aflame with longing and sorrow,

And captured the mind with passion and bewildered it.

A dusky one: were night, with his aid, to challenge

The dawn assailing it, it would defeat it.

He sees no cause for reproach in love; and when

The lovesick lover chides him coyly, he appeases him.

He mingled coquetry with signs of coldness,

And his coquettish airs mimicked his anger.

So if a lover sought to reproach him,

The matter was obscure to him and ambiguous.
