إِلى اللَه مِمّا يُلاقي المحبّ
بِلَيلىfor Layla وماand not نالَhe gained فيin الحُبِّlove نَيلاany gain
بِلَيلى وما نالَ في الحُبِّ نَيلا
To God I complain of what the lover endures
To God from what a lover faces
In loving Layla, yet he has gained nothing in love.
Of Layla and what he attained not in love
قَضىhe spent العمرَhis lifetime بينbetween بُكاًweeping واِشتياقٍand longing
قَضى العمرَ بين بُكاً واِشتياقٍ
فَيَبكيso he weeps نَهاراًby day وَيَشتاقُand he longs لَيلاby night
فَيَبكي نَهاراً وَيَشتاقُ لَيلا
He spent his life between weeping and longing,
He spent a lifetime in weeping and yearning
So he weeps by day and longs by night.
