هُمthey نَقَضواthey broke عَهدَthe covenant of الوِدادِaffection وأَقبَلواand they set about
يَرمونَthey seek منfrom قَلبيmy heart البَقاءَremaining علىtrue to العَهدِthe covenant
They broke the covenant of affection, and set about
They broke the covenant of affection and came
seeking from my heart fidelity to the covenant.
casting from my heart the survival upon the covenant
يَقولونthey say لوif تَصفوyou are sincere صَفَوناwe would be sincere وَهيهمُand suppose they (uncertain reading)
وفواthey fulfilled بالَّذيthat which قالواthey said فَماذاthen what الَّذيthat which يُجديdoes any good
They say, “If you are sincere, we will be sincere”—and suppose they
They say if you are pure then be pure with them
fulfilled what they said: what good would it do?
And fulfill what they have said so what is the benefit
أَلَمdid … not? يَسمَعواthey heed قَولَthe words of الوشاةthe slanderers وَجاهَرواand they openly declared
علىfor غيرno ذَنبٍfault بالقَطيعَةِwith estrangement والصَدِّand rejection
Did they not heed the slanderers’ words and openly declare
Did they not hear the words of the slanderers and announced
estrangement and rejection, though I had done no wrong?
with no fault the estrangement and rejection
