The sanctuary’s herd of gazelles
The lord of the sanctuary
Swayed through a safflower-hued, cleft valley.
Strode through a dusty valley full of ruins
طافَcircumambulated واِلتزمand clung to the shrine
ومرَّand passed يسحبtrailing ذيلَهُhis hem لِزَمزَمtoward Zamzam
He circled the shrine and clung to it,
He wandered and pulled his trailing robe
And passed on, trailing his hem toward Zamzam.
And passed by Zamzam

Love for him is the desire
My heart and body in his love are fraught
Of my heart, and my body is wasted by love for him.

I said, when he bent
His shoulder, swayed his height and bent
His flank, swaying his figure and bending again:
Oh brother of the sanctuary

“O brother of the sanctuary,
Your aloofness has crushed my soul and poisoned me
Your coldness has shattered my heart and poisoned it.
Leave this aloofness

Leave coldness behind,
And join the longing, from your rejection I seek remedy
And grant union to a lovesick soul whom your coldness has brought to death’s brink.

What has happened is enough,
And I have nearly faded from the excess of sickness
And from such grievous sickness I nearly vanished.
So permit this devotion

He passed and smiled,
And said gently, fortunes are divided
And said, “Patience, for fortunes are apportioned.
Whoever loves, endures

Whoever loves endures,
And every patient one attains what he desires
And everyone patient attains his goal.

My radiant beauty
The full moon was jealous when it rose
Made the full moon jealous when it shone forth.

By claiming to love me but had no patience
Those who claimed to love me yet showed no patience!”
I said assuredly
قُلتُI said لاno جَرَمdoubt (in this idiom)
الحُبُّlove مغرمٌa burden والمحِبُّand the lover مُغرمenthralled
I said, “No doubt:
Passion holds the lover hostage
Love is a burden, and the lover is enthralled.

Relieve me with a meeting,
And do not leave me discarded in your love
And do not leave me cast aside in love for you.

O fawn of the sand dune,
Be kind to your lover for beauty is lasting
Be kind to your lover, for kindness lasts longer.

Far from it! May your lover not suffer from passion
Far be it that your lovesick lover should suffer in love.

By your beauty, and passion holds sway over him.”

Come closer, your joy is hastened by union
Come, for your good fortune has favored you with union.

And kiss the corners of my mouth, and sip from my dusky lips.

Of his saliva, while banners of joy fluttered.

And fragrance filled the air,
And my love continues to feast at the goblets
And my beloved spent the night filling the cups to the brim.
