يَقولsays تفّاحُناour apple الزاهيradiant بنضرتهin its freshness
يَقول تفّاحُنا الزاهي بنضرته
وَقَدand already جنتهplucked it يَدُthe hand الجانيof the picker منfrom الفَنَنِthe bough
وَقَد جنته يَدُ الجاني من الفَنَنِ
Our apple, radiant in its freshness, says,
Our apple tree says in its greenness
After the picker’s hand had plucked it from the bough,
Though a robber has plucked its fruits with skill
وَقلَّدتهand hung it as a necklace يدُthe hand الحسناءِof the beautiful woman عاتقَهاher shoulder
وَقلَّدته يدُ الحسناءِ عاتقَها
ماnot أبتُI returned منfrom غُصنٍa branch إلّاexcept إلىto غصنِa branch
ما أبتُ من غُصنٍ إلّا إلى غصنِ
And the beauty’s hand had adorned her shoulder with it:
A fair maid has hung it round her neck
“I returned from one branch only to another.”
No bough have I sought but the boughs it bears
