O you who have reached, in the eloquence of the Arabs,

the furthest bounds of hope and the utmost of desire!

And O eloquent one whose eloquence contains

the pearls of meaning and the jewel of literature!

And O master whose eloquence has surpassed

Qays and Quss in poetry and oratory!

Neither wine, in its clarity and delicacy,

smiling to reveal the mouths of bubbles,

nor the bride with budding breasts, laughing,

smiling to reveal pearls of cool, sweet teeth,

is more enticing or more splendid than a woven rhyme

you gave your admirer from close at hand.

It gave the soul, through its delight,

what the choicest grape-wine never gave it.

You clothed it in your wondrous verse, and indeed

it came by night, a necklace of bright stars.

So I spent the night, through it, in wondrous intoxication,

taking an evening draught of joy and rapture.

And through it I gained union with a beautiful woman,

sweeping along in a robe of gold.

What heart, then, did it not grant rapture?

And what mind did it summon that failed to answer?

You included your apology in it, and thereby stripped away

the many forms of sorrow from a grieving heart.

If you have not answered my invitation, you are a gallant youth

who fills the bucket of contentment up to its binding-rope.

Glory to Him who endowed you with an instinct for play

with verse and prose—what extraordinary play!

May you remain in life's ease and comfort,

trailing its hems through the ages.
