ياO طودَmountain مَجدٍof glory فيin المَكارِمnoble deeds راسِsteadfast
ساميlofty العمادthe pillars موطَّدfirmly established الآساسِthe foundations
O mountain of glory, steadfast in noble deeds,
O you towering pillar of glory and generosity
With lofty pillars and foundations firmly set.
Lofty, sturdy, firmly founded base
لاno غروwonder إِنif سقطfell الجوادُthe steed لعثرةٍbecause of a stumble
عثرتstumbled لَهاbecause of it قدمُthe foot النَدىof generosity والباسِand valor
No wonder if the steed fell at a stumble,
No wonder the thoroughbred stumbles and falls
At which the foot of generosity and valor stumbled.
When feet slip on dew and mail coats
فَلَقَدfor indeed حملتَyou loaded عليهupon it أَثقالَthe burdens العُلىof eminence
فَغَداso it became ذَلولاًdocile بعدafter طولِa long spell of شِماسِrestiveness
For you had laid upon it the burdens of eminence,
For you have burdened him with the heaviest of noble duties
So it became docile after long restiveness.
And he has wilted after long enduring them
حتّىuntil إِذاwhen أَلقيتَyou let out فضلَthe slack عِنانِهof its rein
سَبقاًto race ahead إِلىtoward الغاياتthe goals قَبلَbefore الناسِthe people
Until, when you let out the slack of its rein,
Until you gave him his head, and let slip his reins
To race toward the goals ahead of everyone,
Racing ahead of all others toward the ultimate goals
لَمnot يَستَطِعcould حَملاًbear a load لماof what أَوقَرتَهyou had laden it with
فَهوىso it fell كَماas يَهويfalls العَظيمُthe mighty one الراسيfirmly rooted
It could not bear what you had laden it with,
Unable to bear what you made so weighty
So it fell as a mighty, firmly rooted mountain falls.
He fell just as a firmly planted tall tree falls
هَيهاتfar from possible أَنthat يَسطيعَit could يحملُcarry راكِضاًwhile galloping
جبلَthe mountain العُلىof eminence فرسٌa horse منamong الأَفراسِthe horses
How could it possibly carry, while galloping,
Never could a racing steed bear and run
The mountain of eminence—a horse among horses?
With the mountain of highest rank on his back
فَليذهَبso let him perish النَغلُthe bastard الحَسودُthe envious one لماbecause of what بهafflicts him
وَليحظَand let him gain مِمّاfrom what رامَهhe sought it بالياسِwith despair
So let the envious bastard perish of what ails him,
So let the envious churl go wanting what he has
And let despair be his portion of what he sought.
And find but despair in his hopes
واِسلمand remain safe علىthrough مرِّthe passing of اللَياليthe nights راتعاًreveling
فيin طيبِthe sweetness of عيشٍlife طيِّبfragrant الأَنفاسِthe breaths
And remain safe through the passing nights, reveling
And relax in comfort, breathing sweet breaths
In the sweetness of a life with fragrant breaths.
Peacefully spending long nights
