O mistress of the secluded chamber, wearer of fine wraps and veils,

Away from me, for love poetry is not my desire.

In every tall, swaying spear, bent

By my two hands, I find enough to forgo your blooming figure.

From every pleasure-giving pursuit I have turned

My flank away, and averted my eyes from coming and going.

Glory suffices me; I seek no other love.

The sway of dusky spears suffices in place of dusky beauties.

Nor have I mourned the time in which I spent

My youthful days in life's ample expanse,

Save for parting from brothers I had grown fond of,

Each with head held high, like a keen blade of hard steel.

Their waistcloths spotless since their amulets were hung,

They won as much glory as they won victory.

From their houses they raised the domes of lofty honor,

And dwelt on the summit of eminence among Mudar.

    تُغنيك غُرَّته عن طَلعةِ القَمرِ

    Many a noble man among them is graced with proud dignity;

His radiant brow leaves you no need of the moon's face.

May life-giving rain water the home of fellowship that united them,

And may sweet rain never pass its courtyards by.

O men, help a lover worthy of lofty honor,

Who spends evening and morning in peril at fortune's mercy.

Had the nights dealt fairly with me, I would have attained my goal,

And not spent the night allied to longing, barren of fulfillment.

Now I secure my hopes and attain them,

Through a noble man who neither boasts of his favors nor grows impatient,

Sound in judgment, he paid no heed to calamity,

Nor did the hand of days and fortune's reversals betray him.
