O east wind, where does this fragrance come from?

If it comes from the beloved's encampment, how delightful!

By God, did you make for the eastern side of the sanctuary

and reach its watering place, kept free of debris?

Or did you trail your hem among its arak trees

and take a share of those graces?

Or were you fortunate enough to kiss his mantle's trailing hem

and gain from his breath the sweetness of fragrance?

And my lifeblood—if he accepts it—would be a ransom

for a young gazelle who has taken possession of every heart.

When my reproachers saw his face,

each offered their life as his ransom and invoked protection for him.

And the one urging me to forget him began to say:

I never thought the one you were enamored of was like this!

When he unveiled his cheek's ruby surface,

he showed us emerald along both sides of his face.

And he shot at hearts; the arrow of his glances was

keener than an arrow that hits its mark, and more piercing.

Would that the one who kindled love for him in my heart

would save it from rejection's fire and deliver it!

And despite his coldness, how sweet my passion for him would be,

if I were safe from harm in loving him!

The reproacher thought his counsel had guided me

after my straying; he had not guided me, but merely babbled.
