May rain bless Mathnat al-Hijaz and its fragrance,

and the open grounds of its garden and the foot of its dune,

and the shade of spreading trees by its watercourse, which

flows between its channel and its outlet,

and the gardens of its broad plain, which surpassed

all gardens in their beauty and fragrance.

Plague is driven from its water and its air,

and its soil, by the soundness of its composition.

    How wonderful its precincts, where

my soul gained its full share of pleasures!

How often I passed the night there, trailing youth's hem,

swaggering between its Rabab and its cherished fosterling!

And reason's restraint held me back, until

the cup's heady force began to creep through me.

I tore the cloak of dignity in a fit of youthful passion,

whose marvel my age has never ceased to admire.

Ah, what a night! No effort was spared

by its wine's golden hue in gilding it.

How often it jeweled a cup with the pearls of its bubbles!

Rather, how often it healed a soul through its beloved's nearness!

O cupbearer of delicious wine, bring it!

And with its solace soothe the heart of one who pines for it.

Bring your cups near—may you never be far! There is no doing without

bringing them near, if you seek to put sorrow far away.

Keep drinking it, morning and evening,

for convivial joy depends on its devoted drinker.

Describe it with its finest descriptions and qualities,

and choose its epithets when bestowing names upon it.

Red, it gleams in the cups as though it were

a ruby melted in the hand of its melter.

It dispelled the drinkers' cares with its unmixed wine,

and the cup's mouth broke into a smile at its blending.

Had its vine not been planted in the garden,

no gray dove would have trilled its joyful song.

It summoned minds to bewilderment; none attained

the sum of pleasures but one who answered its call.

And a beauty who resembled the morning sun

in loveliness at her rising and her setting:

she appears radiant, stealing every gaze

with her sunrise, then vanishes into her deep blackness.

She came of age, and sorrow's fire flared in my breast,

so I confined my poetry to singing my love for her.

    فاِعجب لحُسن نَسيبها لنَسيبها

    I claimed kinship with her, and sang of her in my verse;

marvel at the lovely love-verse her kinsman made for her.

And one marvel is that the ember of her cheek

glows, so my heart complains of its flame's heat.

Since I lost her, my lovesickness for her has never ceased

to decree the shedding and streaming of my tears.

Never for an hour was the wellspring of union with her easy for me to drink,

without her making me choke through her watcher's eye.

By God, your Lord, listen: I shall explain to you

my states in love, in their proper order.

    فمُنِعتُها فَقَضيتُ من كلفي بها

    I saw her, then loved her, then sought her;

then I was denied her, then died of my passion for her.

O my reproacher, you did not seek to ease my heart

of longing for her; rather, you increased its torment.

Do not heap advice upon me; those counsels

are amply refuted by the truth of my love.

They are nothing but idle fancies you babble

in my view, however carefully you polish them.

Impossible that reproach should make a lover forget

whose boundless passion only grows through its rebukes,

and who deems forgetting a calamity, once

the arrows of her glances have pierced him with their unerring shafts.

I have kept selecting choice poetry to describe her

and to praise the elect of eminence and its noble scion,

the bestower of knowledge, favors, and bounty,

and the overseer and chief of the lords of guidance.

When lineages are reckoned, he is their well-born scion,

their renowned nobleman, and their nobleman's son.

He won glory through prophetic descent,

a descent that needs neither its mantle nor its staff.

And he related his glory, link by link, in an account

too exalted for the son of its peer and its kinsman.

A gallant man: whenever the pulpits of praise are mounted,

his virtues become the tongue of their orator.

And when assemblies crowd with men of rank,

their Husayn al-Hasani is foremost in their spacious halls.

He is the Kaaba of excellence, toward which yearns

the heart of each penitent among the community of the virtuous.

The defiant humbled themselves and bowed to his glory,

as one who fears them submits to the might of one they fear.

O noble-hearted man who has outstripped all mankind

in eminence's goals, both far and near,

you have surpassed the sky, rising to a height that

the palm of its Khadib cannot reach.

And in the bloom of youth you gathered glories

that gray-haired men never gained in their old age.

How admirable you are, a generous, noble man!

Through him, hopes laughed after their sobbing.

And here for you is a radiant poem that captivates minds,

through familiar words rather than outlandish ones.

It has come to you, expressing my soul's longing, when

it yearned to meet you with its aged she-camels' yearning cry.

Compare other poems with it in beauty, and you will find

the lover's verse surpasses the verse of its Habib.

May you remain safe, and endure in blessing forever,

strutting in the newest of its cloaks,

as long as the east wind sways the blossoms of the hills,

or a gray dove sings upon its branch.
