May God water our days in the Hijaz,

And may the copious downpour never pass them by.

For how blissful my life was in those days,

When the desolate dwelling was peopled by my presence.

Indeed, my yearning and remembrance of them have lasted long,

Yet there is no profit in what has passed.

Ah, my soul's anguish for it, now gone!

It departed, while yearning dwells within me.

Do you think the one for whom my passion endures—

While my state is altered by losing him—

Has learned that my yearning for him does not fade,

And that my patience since his departure is fading?

    وَخَيرُ الظِبا الشادِنُ الخاذِلُ

    They tell me that he is a deserter;

Yet the finest of gazelles is the young one that deserts the herd.

Do you reproach me, ignorant of his state?

    Woe to you, O reproacher!

The smooth rock answers, but he does not,

While my tears stream down my cheek.
