I wept in sorrow—if only weeping could ward death from you.
I wept in anguish, had my weeping turned away your fate,
And I wailed in anguish—if only a wail could heal heartache.
And I cried in agony, had a cry of pain relieved your plight.
أُغالبُI struggle against فيكَfor you الوجدَanguish والوجدُand anguish غالبٌprevailing

I wrestle with anguish for you, and anguish prevails,
I struggle with passion, though passion prevails,
and the strength of my endurance remains frail with weakness.
And my patience failed, for it was ever so frail.

And can one whose heart death has laid waste
What solace is left, when fate wrecks one’s peace?
find solace, when time's hand has severed his hand?
Comfort is naught, as time’s cruelty never shall cease.

God be with you, a right hand folded away by decay's hand,
For you, God’s blessing from favors He did endow,
and an eye toward which death's eye cast a glance;
As the eye of fate glanced kindly towards you.

and a great tree of glory, leafy with high honors,
And glory’s acme in lofty deeds, and the draft
upon which the fates descended until it withered to chaff;
Of honor, which misfortunes have to naughtness raft.

and a sun of eminence, shining with noble deeds,
And the sun of renown in graces shining bright,
upon which the days inflicted an eclipse through their calamities;
Whose days for your glory did in splendor light.

and a veiled lady, well defended by spears,
And the veiled beauty in loftiest of traits,
over whom glory stretches a roof of protection.
O’er which glory extends its protective gates.

The death-announcers mourned me in sorrow for her; yet in truth,
We grieve, though grief helps naught, and yet
through her they made me drink the cup of sorrow unmixed.
Grief’s bitter cup my lips cannot forget.
أَأُختيَO my sister إِنif أَمسيتِyou have become رهنَcaptive to مقابرٍgraves

O my sister, if you have become a captive of graves,
My sister, if in the grave you are confined,
then my heart has become an endowment to its grief.
Then know my heart is to sorrow inclined.

Sorrows overwhelm me over you, yet they only
More pains for you my heart amass,
overwhelm a sufferer wasted by anguish, or near death.
But love’s pangs, or grief, I cannot surpass.

If the heart once concealed, to preserve its composure,
If my heart concealed in pretext its woe,
its burning grief, it has revealed at your loss what it hid.
Now for you unveiled, it allows grief to flow.
وَليand I have كربةٌa torment قدindeed باينَhas deserted الصبرُpatience لهفَهاits anguish

And I have a torment whose anguish patience has deserted;
I suffer an anguish which patience betrayed,
so here I am, leaping in its snares, trembling.
So here am I, lost in its dismal shade.
أَبيتُI spend the night بهاجاwith it; partial 'shunning' فيending of 'shunning' (split word) المبيتِthe sleeping-place وقدwhile already وَرَتhas flared

I spend the night in this torment, shunning my bed, while there has flared
I passed the night in desolation’s chains,
at my sides a fire from my heart that never goes out.
As by my side kindled sorrow’s flames.

I alternate my hands upon my breast,
I flail ‘twixt hope and despair on the sand,
and let a streaming flow of tears fall from my eyelid for it.
And tears from my eyes by your memory fanned.
وَلَوand if وعيَتhad heard أَذناكyour ears كثرَthe abundance of تأوُّهيmy groaning

Had your ears heard my many groans,
Had you heard my sighs, you would understand
you would know how devoted and how pure my brotherly love is.
My truth in grief, be it manifest or banned.
وَكَمand how many عبرةٍa tear لاnot تملكُcan manage العَينُthe eye ردَّهاto hold it back

And how many a tear the eye cannot hold back
How many tears that the eyes won’t shun,
have I struck my wounded eyelid with when it dozed;
Whose surge, as I slept, made their injury run.

and how many a sigh of anguish I sought to stifle with patience,
How many moans that patience concealed,
yet scarcely had I managed when it left me twice the sorrow.
Yet sorrow on its heels swiftly wheeled.
فَلِلَّهِso, by God دَهرٌan age لاnot تَزالcease صروفُهits vicissitudes

إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle اِنقضىended صَرفٌa calamity أَتاحَتthey brought لناto us صَرفاa calamity
What an age, by God! Its vicissitudes never cease:
Such is time, whose seasons never stand still,
whenever one calamity ends, they bring us another.
No sooner one passes, than comes at its will
عليَّagainst me لأَصنافِfor the kinds of الرَزاياcalamities تناوبٌtaking turns
أُساورI wrestle with منهاof them كلَّevery آونةٍmoment صِنفاa kind
The kinds of calamity take turns assailing me;
Another one. Varied sorrows beset me,
I wrestle with one kind of them at every moment.
I’m fated, each era, fresh grief to see.
أَفيmust it be in كلِّeach عامٍyear ليof mine قَريبٌa kinsman يَروعُنيterrifies me

Must a kinsman of mine terrify me each year
Is there a year when some loved one’s not lost?
with bereavement, and a dear companion leave me grief a thousandfold?
Replaced by new grief for one I still grieve and cost.
إِلىto اللَهGod أَشكوهاI complain of them نوائبَcalamities جمّةًmany
وَصَرفَand a calamity زَمانٍof time لاnot أُطيقI am capable of لهfor it صَرفاwarding off
To God I complain of them—many calamities,
To God I complain of the blows I sustains
and a turn of time I have no power to turn aside.
From time’s endless seasons of unbearable pains.
كَذاكَthus خطوبُthe calamities الدهرof time تعدوassail علىupon الوَرىmankind
فَكَمso how many أَسبَلَتmade stream طَرفاًan eye وَكَمand how many سَلَبَتsnatched away طِرفاa treasure
Thus the calamities of time assail mankind:
Thus is the fate of time o’er mortals to trod,
how many eyes they have made stream, and how many treasures they have stolen.
How many tears spilled, how many joys robbed!
وَكَمand how many أَنزلَتcast down منfrom شامخthe heights of المَجدِglory ماجِداًa noble man

And how many a noble man have they cast down from glory's heights,
How many it brought down from glory’s towering crest,
for whom eminence builds a refuge out of his might;
As heights it had scaled became its bequest.
إِذاwhen رامَhe sought أَمراًan aim هزَّhe brandished أَسمرَa brown lance عاسِلاًquivering

who, when he sought an aim, brandished a quivering brown lance,
When resolved, it shook one in power invested,
and when asked for bounty, stirred his shoulder in response.
When asked a favor, inclined to one distressed.
أَناخَتthey settled عليهupon him لمnot تراقبthey respected لهfor him عُلاًeminence

فألوَتso they swept away بهhim خَسفاًin abasement وأَزرتand debased بهhim عَسفاwith oppression
They settled upon him, with no regard for his eminence,
It pitched its tents heedless of one’s high station,
and swept him into abasement and debased him with oppression.
Consigned him to pits, and connived in privation.
وَلَمand not تَرعthey heeded إِذwhen أَمّتهthey came to him جرداءَunarmed سابحاًa galloping horse

Nor, when they came to him unarmed, did they heed a galloping horse,
It cared not, when bared of all armor and steed
nor a sleek, jet-black horse, nor a swift, lean she-camel.
A swimmer, deprived of all garb he may need.
وَكَمand how many قدindeed سَبتthey took captive منfrom مَعقِلthe stronghold العزِّof honor حُرَّةًa freeborn lady

And how many a freeborn lady have they taken captive from honor's stronghold,
How many a sanctuary of might it tore down,
whose earring the Pleiades would wish to become!
Which riches aspired in its glory to drown!
تخطَّتthey stepped past إِليهاto her مُرهفاتkeen-edged swords بواتراًcleaving
وَخَطّيَّةًand Khatt spears سمراًbrown وماذيَّةand fine coats of mail زغفاample
To reach her they stepped past keen-edged, cleaving swords,
It mounted attacks with fully equipped cavalry,
and brown Khatt spears and fine, ample coats of mail.
Sable, chestnut, and roan horses prancery.
فأَخنَتso they brought ruin عليهاupon her لاnot تهابfearing جموعَهاher hosts
وَلَمand not تخشَthey feared سِتراًa covering قدhad أُذيلَbeen let down ولاnor سجفاa curtain
So they brought ruin upon her, unafraid of her hosts,
Yet it was not daunted by these troops so immense,
nor did they fear a covering let down, or a curtain.
It feared no protector, had deference to no defense.
وَهاand here أَناI am قدindeed حاوَلتُI have sought صَبريmy patience تأَسّياًfor consolation

وَكيفand how التأَسّيconsolation والأَسىwhile sorrow لمnot يزلhas ceased to be حِلفاa sworn companion
And here I am: I have sought my patience for consolation,
But alas! Grief left me in pain distraught.
but how can there be consolation, when sorrow remains a sworn companion?
Sorrow insisted I shed copious tears,
أَبىrefused الوَجدُanguish إِلّاanything but أَنthat أريقَI pour out مدامعاًtears

Anguish insists that I pour out tears;
Which I cannot restrain, how much I fear.
they outrun me, and I cannot restrain them.
O her grave! Still the noblest of all that were dug,
فَياso O قَبرَهاher grave لاmay you not زلتَcease to be أَشرفَthe noblest حُفرةٍhollow

O her grave, may you ever remain the noblest of hollows,
To which breeze hems cling, their edges to tug.
to which the breeze's trailing skirts cling for fragrance.
God’s blessing you keep, that shall never depart,
يؤمُّكَseeks you out رضوانٌdivine favor منfrom اللَهGod واسعٌabundant

May abundant favor from God seek you out,
Drawing you closer to the home of her heart.
drawing the one entrusted to you close to her Lord.
I do not implore you to rain tears on this place,

I ask no rain of the clouds for you, so long as there flow
Since my eyes stream plenty, heedless of chase.
tears from my eyelid—I care nothing for their depletion.
I shall come to you, if tears I do not impart,
لؤمتُI would be base إِذاif لَمnot أسقكَI water you with الدمعَtears هاطِلاًpouring

I would be base if I did not water you with pouring tears,
To offer the blood of my breaking heart.
and instead turned to seeking the steady rain of laden clouds for you.
