فارقتُI left مكّةَMecca والأقدارُand the fates تُقحِمُنيdrive me onward
وَليand I have فؤادٌa heart بهاin her ثاوٍabiding مَدىthroughout الزَمنِtime
I left Mecca, with the fates driving me onward,
I left Mecca as fate compelled me,
And my heart dwells there for all time.
yet my heart remained enthralled throughout time.
فارقتُهاI left her لاnot رضىًconsent منّيfrom me وقدand indeed شهدَتbore witness
بذاكَto that أَملاكُangels ذاكthat الحِجرthe Hijr والرُكُنِand the Corner
I left her, not of my own will, and witness was borne
I left it unwillingly, as those lands can attest -
To that by the angels of that Hijr and the Corner.
the angels of that stone and corner.
فارقتُهاI left her وبودّيand my wish was إذwhen فَرَقتُI parted بهاin her
لَوif only كانَhad been قدalready فارَقتparted from روحيmy soul بهاin her بَدَنيmy body
I left her, and as I parted there, I wished
I left it, my love torn away as I departed -
That my soul had parted there from my body.
if only my soul had left my body there instead.
