أَئنُّI groan منfrom الشَوقlonging الَّذيthat فيin جَوانحيmy ribs
أَنينَthe groan of غَصيصٍone choking بالشَرابon the drink قَريحِwounded
I groan from the longing within my breast,
with the groan of a wounded man choking on drink.
وأَبكيand I weep بعينٍwith an eye لاdoes not تكفُّcease غروبُهاits floods of tears
وَأَصبوand I yearn بِقَلبٍwith a heart بالغَرامby love جَريحِwounded
And I weep with an eye whose tears never cease,
and yearn with a heart wounded by love.
وأَلتاعُand I burn with anguish وَجداًwith longing كلَّماwhenever هبَّتblew الصَباthe east wind
بنَشرwith the fragrance of خُزامىlavender أَوor بنفحةِwith a breath of شيحِwormwood
And I burn with longing whenever the east wind blows,
bearing lavender's fragrance or a breath of wormwood.
إِلىto اللَهGod قَلباًa heart لاnot يَزالُceases to be معذَّباًtormented
بِتأَنيبِby the rebuke of لاحٍa reproacher أَوor بِهجرِby the abandonment of مَليحِa lovely beloved
To God I complain of a heart forever tormented,
by a reproacher's rebuke or a beauty's abandonment.
فَياso, O عصرَناour time بالرَقمتينat al-Raqmatayn الَّذيwhich خَلاpassed
لَكَfor you اللَهGod جُدbe generous بالقُربwith nearness بعدafter نُزوحِdeparture far away
So, O our time at al-Raqmatayn, now gone,
God be with you! Grant reunion after separation.
أَرِقتُI lay sleepless وقدwhile already نامَslept الخَليُّthe carefree one منfrom الأَسىsorrow
لبَرقٍbecause of lightning بأَعلىin the heights of الرَقمتينal-Raqmatayn لَموحِflashing
I lay sleepless, while one free of sorrow slept,
because of lightning flashing in the heights of al-Raqmatayn.
فَبِتُّso I spent the night كَماjust as باتَspent the night السَليمُthe snakebitten one مُسهَّداًkept awake
بجَفنٍwith an eyelid علىover تلكthose السُفوحslopes سَفوحِpouring out tears
So I spent the night sleepless, like one bitten by a snake,
with an eyelid streaming tears over those slopes.
يُهيِّجstirs أَشجانيmy sorrows ترنُّمُthe warbling of صادِحٍa songbird
وَيوقِظُand awakens أَحزانيmy sorrows تنسُّمُthe wafting of ريحِa breeze
A songbird's warbling stirs my sorrows,
and the wafting of a breeze awakens my grief.
فَلِلَّهso, to God (in praise) بالجَرعاءat al-Jarʿāʾ حيٌّa clan عَهِدتُهمI knew them
يحلُّونَthey dwell منهاof it فيin مَعاهدَhaunts فيحِspacious
So, God bless the clan at al-Jarʿāʾ I once knew,
dwelling in its spacious haunts,
لَياليَon nights لَيليmy night منfrom بَهيمpitch-black ذوائِبٍtresses
وَصُبحيand my morning منfrom وجهa face أَعرَّsmooth and hairless صَبيحِradiant
on nights when my night came from pitch-black tresses,
and my morning from a smooth, radiant face.
هُمُthey نُجحُthe fulfillment of آماليmy hopes وَنَيلُand the attainment of مآربيmy desires
وَصحَّةُand the healing of أَسقاميmy ailments وَراحةُand the repose of روحيmy soul
They are the fulfillment of my hopes and the attainment of my desires,
and the healing of my ailments and the repose of my soul.
لَئنeven if مرَّhas passed دَهرٌan age بالتَنائيin separation فقدyet indeed حلاwas sweet
غَبوقيmy evening draught بهمwith them فيماin the time that مَضىpassed وَصَبوحيand my morning draught
Though an age has passed in separation, sweet indeed were
my evening and morning draughts with them in days gone by.
