مَهلاًgently سقتكَmay they water you الغواديthe morning rainclouds هاطلَpouring الديمthe lasting rains
مَهلاً سقتكَ الغوادي هاطلَ الديم
منwho ذاis it that يباريكrivals you فيin قَولٍspeech وفيand in حكمِwise sayings
من ذا يباريك في قَولٍ وفي حكمِ
Gently—may morning clouds water you with pouring, lasting rain!
Slow down, the valleys have poured forth your blood
Who can rival you in speech and wisdom?
Who can compare to you in speech and wisdom?
نطمتَyou strung together قسراًforcibly نجومَthe stars الأفقthe horizon فيin نسَقٍan ordered array
نطمتَ قسراً نجومَ الأفق في نسَقٍ
ورمتَand you sought نظميmy verse وأَينand where الأفقُthe horizon منcompared with كَلِميmy words
ورمتَ نظمي وأَين الأفقُ من كَلِمي
You forcibly strung the horizon’s stars in an ordered array,
You have forcibly aligned the stars of the horizon in rows
And sought my verse—but how far the horizon is from my words!
And you have cast my poems - but where is the horizon to my words?
ماnot الدرُّthe pearls فيin نَسقٍan ordered string والبدرُand the full moon فيin أفقٍa horizon
ما الدرُّ في نَسقٍ والبدرُ في أفقٍ
والليثُand the lion فيin نقمٍvengeance والغَيثُand the rain فيin كرمِgenerosity
والليثُ في نقمٍ والغَيثُ في كرمِ
Neither pearls in a string nor the full moon on the horizon,
Neither is the pearl in rows, nor the moon on the horizon
Nor the lion in vengeance nor the rain in bounty,
Neither is the lion in wrath, nor the rain in generosity
أَبهىmore beautiful نظاماًin arrangement وأَسنىand more radiant منكthan you مطَّلعاin rising
أَبهى نظاماً وأَسنى منك مطَّلعا
أَدهىmore formidable اِنتقاماًin vengeance وأَجدىand more bountiful منكthan you فيin نعمِblessings
أَدهى اِنتقاماً وأَجدى منك في نعمِ
Are lovelier in array or more radiant in rising than you,
You have risen more harmoniously and auspiciously than them
Or more formidable in vengeance or more generous in blessings than you.
You have proven more formidable in vengeance, more generous in bounty
فَهلso, is there لمنfor one who رامَsought أَنto يَحكيmatch عُلاكyour loftiness عُلاًin glory
فَهل لمن رامَ أَن يَحكي عُلاك عُلاً
فيin مثلthe like of هذيthese المساعيthe endeavors الغرِّillustrious منany قدمِstanding
في مثل هذي المساعي الغرِّ من قدمِ
So does one who seeks to match your loftiness in glory
Can one who aspires describe your loftiness with loftiness?
Have any standing in such illustrious endeavors?
In the likes of these ambitious pursuits, so perilous from the start
إِنif رمتyou seek فخراًboasting فَقُلthen speak ماwhatever شئتَyou wish منof هِمَمٍlofty aspirations
إِن رمت فخراً فَقُل ما شئتَ من هِمَمٍ
أَوor رمتَyou seek مشياًwalking فطأthen tread ماwhatever شئتyou wish منof قمَمِsummits
أَو رمتَ مشياً فطأ ما شئت من قمَمِ
If you wish to boast, speak of whatever lofty aspirations you please;
If you have sought pride, then say what you wish of aspirations
Or if you wish to walk, tread whatever summits you please.
Or if you have sought to walk, then tread wherever you wish of summits
