O departing ones, who yet dwell within the heart,

have you shelter and homelands anywhere but in my heart?

Take lodging anywhere on earth you please,

for you dwell in the heart's innermost core.

And you, O camel-driver of the litters that departed,

bearing moons and boughs this evening,

by God, if those who departed have no choice

but a resting place in al-Ḥimā where the litters find shelter,

then turn toward the eastern side of Wādī al-Raml in Iḍam,

where there are saxaul trees, pools, laurels, and moringas.

Perhaps they may alight at a stopping place there

where they once alighted, when Time was glad.

In those days I strutted merrily in youth's mantle,

while life was tender and its pure delight luxuriant.

May God spare that distant one loneliness; I am kept awake

by his memory, while he is carefree and drowsy.

Thirst in his absence withered the tender foliage of my youth,

while his bough is lush with the waters of beauty.

May God one day greet his lover's soul with him,

for he is nothing but sweet basil for souls.

He is far too exalted in beauty to be matched by

a gazelle, a full moon, boughs, and sand dunes.

By God, how much beauty he has to pride himself on!

If only kindness accompanied that beauty!

    دَعني فعذلُك شانٌ والهوى شانُ

    O you who chide me for loving him, do not go to extremes;

leave me; your reproach is one thing, and love another.

By God, his lover has never argued with the reproachers

without beauty furnishing proof in his defense.

And how far from my ears are the censurer and his gilded words,

when love is my sovereign and my demon!

And one night my full moon lay embracing me,

in joy, while the moon on the horizon was jealous.

Then he kept quenching the burning thirst of passion in my heart,

for before there had been aversion and estrangement,

until dawn appeared and the night's stars took fright,

as though they were little sheep and dawn a wolf.

Then he rose, swaying a form graced with a slender waist,

as though drunk on the wine of union.

And he departed, the tears from his eyelids pearls,

and I departed, the tears from my eyelids pure gold.

God bless those times of union, now past, which decreed

that no future age should bring them back as long as I live.

    وذكرُ ما قد مَضى للوجد عنوانُ

    They passed, and nothing remained for me but remembering them;

and remembrance of what has passed is the sign of longing.

So, O time of al-Liwā, hail to you—what a time you were!

And may pouring rain never cease over al-Liwā and the hillside.
