He came, while night's horizon was cloaked in austerity,

and dawn had almost become visible to the eye.

The full moon strutted merrily through its darkness,

and mirth adorned the full moon's rival beside me:

a slender youth, whose palm the wine made light,

while drunkenness weighed down his sides, making him sway.

He appeared, passing round the wine, red and radiant,

its radiance casting a white blaze upon night's brow.

So cast aside your fire-striker; seek no flame from it:

let whoever holds the cup in his palm strike no firestick.

He brought it to a household firmly rooted in glory,

unshaken by either sorrow or joy.

    At celebrations, wine is their evening draught;

in battle, their morning draught is their enemies' blood.

They are poison to their foes whenever a raid arises,

and clouds of generosity and bounty when they give.

Their faces, when unveiled, eclipse the moons,

and their hands shame the clouds when they bestow.

They turned to opportunities for pleasure close at hand,

yet never turned from lofty honor, nor swerved.

    كانَت أَمانيَّ نَفسي وَالهَوى مِنحُ

    He spent the night giving me gifts from his wine jar;

they were my soul's wishes—and love consists of gifts.

And a beauty—when her veils are drawn aside,

the sun is astonished, and the full moon put to shame.

I reproached her after conversation had swayed her,

with reproaches mingled with her coquettish wit.

She turned away, then softened after her harshness,

until, when union could no longer be put aside,

she lowered her gaze and granted my desire, while our chastity

would not let us commit a sin in love.

So we remained clothed in chastity's garment until

baldness almost showed amid the tresses of night.

She rose, and I rose, with fragrance in our clothes

from union, and wounds within our livers.

How hard an ordeal is love, and how tormenting

to the chaste, though he conceals what plainly shows!
