هَذه الأَرضُ قد سقتها السَماءُ

هَذه الأَرضُ قد سقتها السَماءُ

فاِسقِياني سَقَتكما الأَنواءُ

فاِسقِياني سَقَتكما الأَنواءُ

This earth has been watered by the sky;

So give me drink, you two—may the rains water you both—

بنتَ كَرمٍ قَد هامَ كُلُّ كَريم

بنتَ كَرمٍ قَد هامَ كُلُّ كَريم

في هَواها وَطابَ منها الهَواءُ

في هَواها وَطابَ منها الهَواءُ

The vine’s daughter: every noble man has lost himself

In love for her, and the air has grown sweet from her.

واِجلواها عَذراءَ تَحكي عروساً

واِجلواها عَذراءَ تَحكي عروساً

أَلبسَتها نطاقَها الجَوزاءُ

أَلبسَتها نطاقَها الجَوزاءُ

And unveil her, a virgin resembling a bride

Whom al-Jawzāʾ has clothed in her own girdle.

وأَعيدا مَديح يحيى ليحيا

وأَعيدا مَديح يحيى ليحيا

مَيتُ هَجرٍ قد عزَّ منه الشِفاءُ

مَيتُ هَجرٍ قد عزَّ منه الشِفاءُ

And repeat Yahya’s praise, to bring back to life

One dead of separation, whose cure has proved elusive.

هُوَ عَوني عَلى العُلى وَرَجائي

هُوَ عَوني عَلى العُلى وَرَجائي

حبَّذا العَونُ في العُلى وَالرَجاءُ

حبَّذا العَونُ في العُلى وَالرَجاءُ

He is my help toward the heights, and my hope;

How excellent the help toward the heights, and the hope!

وَهوَ أنسي في وحشَتي وَسُروري

وَهوَ أنسي في وحشَتي وَسُروري

في هُمومي وَديمتي الوطفاءُ

في هُمومي وَديمتي الوطفاءُ

And he is my solace in my loneliness, and my joy

Amid my cares, and my cloud of abundant, steady rain.

شملَ الخَلقَ فضلُه فَأَقرَّت

شملَ الخَلقَ فضلُه فَأَقرَّت

بنداهُ الأَمواتُ والأَحياءُ

بنداهُ الأَمواتُ والأَحياءُ

His bounty embraced all creation, so they attested

To his generosity—the dead and the living.

فَبِيَحيى لا يَبرح الفَضلُ يحيا

فَبِيَحيى لا يَبرح الفَضلُ يحيا

وَالمَعالي به لهنَّ اِعتلاءُ

وَالمَعالي به لهنَّ اِعتلاءُ

So through Yahya, excellence never ceases to live,

And through him, high honors rise still higher.

أَحكَم الوُدّ منه عقد إِخائي

أَحكَم الوُدّ منه عقد إِخائي

هَكَذا هَكَذا يَكونُ الإِخاءُ

هَكَذا هَكَذا يَكونُ الإِخاءُ

His affection has made firm my bond of brotherhood;

Thus, thus is brotherhood!
