I would ransom him—a young gazelle who appeared and vanished,
Like the full moon at its rising and setting.
يَجفوhe shuns وَيهجرُand forsakes مُعرضاًturning away متدلِّلاًplaying coy
وَيصدُّand turns aside معتذراًexcusing himself بخوفِbecause of fear of رقيبهِhis watcher
He shuns and forsakes me, turning away and playing coy,
And turns aside, pleading fear of his watcher.
نَفسيmy soul الفِداءُthe ransom لهfor him فقدfor indeed حَسُنhas grown beautiful الهوىlove

My soul be his ransom, for love has grown fair
In him, and sweet through his beauty and fragrance.
ماwhatever شاءَhe wishes فَليصنَعthen let him do فَقَلبيَfor my heart طوعُهُat his command
ودَعand let العذولَthe reproacher يلجُّpersist فيin تأَنيبهِhis rebukes
Let him do whatever he wishes, for my heart is at his command;
And let the reproacher persist in his rebukes.
