My soul be a ransom for one slain in thirst,

Who was given no drink but the edges of gleaming swords and spears.

My soul be his ransom—a fallen man with whom perished

Guidance in knowledge and in deed.

His enemies’ eyes were gladdened, gloating over him,

And the eyes of angels and messengers grew hot with grief.

I would ransom him as he sought aid, with few to help him,

Oppressed, with few horses and retainers.

O fatal fall that laid the proud-nosed low,

And left the faith, through it, with faltering hope.

It bereaved Fatimah, a piece of the Chosen One’s own flesh,

And pained the heart of Ali, the best of successors.
