لمّاwhen جَنىplucked الطرفُthe eye وردَthe rose وجنتِهِhis cheek
لمّا جَنى الطرفُ وردَ وجنتِهِ
عذَّبhe tormented قَلبيmy heart بنارِwith the fire of هجرانِestrangement
عذَّب قَلبي بنارِ هجرانِ
When the eye plucked the rose of his cheek,
he tormented my heart with the fire of estrangement.
فَقُلتُso I said قدindeed جرتَyou acted unjustly ياO فديتُكmay I be your ransom بيtoward me
فَقُلتُ قد جرتَ يا فديتُك بي
عذَّبتَyou tormented قَلبيmy heart وطرفيَwhile my eye الجانيthe culprit
عذَّبتَ قَلبي وطرفيَ الجاني
So I said, “You have wronged me, O you for whom I would give my life:
you tormented my heart, though my eye was the culprit.”
