    My soul for a slender-figured, high-breasted beauty!

I seek to seduce her, and she seeks to seduce me.

Her female reproachers had rebuked her, but in truth

the mole-marked beauty’s reproachers were only jealous over me.

    وَرامَت وِصالي والقُلوبُ شواهدُ

    I was passionately in love with her and sought union with her;

she sought union with me, and our hearts bore witness.

Until we were alone to embrace, and there drew near

a lover of hers, distant even in his nearness.

The talebearers had grown quiet about us and fallen mute,

as black serpents settle in the belly of the earth.

I leveled at her a solid, straightened spear,

before which maidens fall during the thrusting.

When she saw it, she deemed it enormous and proclaimed God’s greatness,

and said, though hardships were as nothing to her:

“By my life, this is what I want—if only a graceful woman

would help me bear it, and I could help her in turn!”

I told her, “Easy! My soul ransom you! For

when the thing desired is huge, helpers are few.

But if you wish, I will insert part of it,

and inserting what remains is for you to decide.”

Then he said, “In God’s name, insert it; I

shall strive to endure it and struggle on.”

So I laid her down, while night had drawn its curtain,

and the beauty had in me a truly noble bedfellow.

Before she knew it, into her depths had plunged

a stout shaft, full of stratagems during the thrusting.

Neither shielded her from my onslaught as I thrust into her:

the dusky tint of her lips nor her upstanding breasts.

She moaned, cried out, swayed heavily, and burst into sobs,

and the undergarments were soaked with the outpouring of blood.

She said, “With this spear you deflower a tender maiden,

though even women past childbearing have proved unequal to it!”

I said, “My soul ransom you! Patience, for these

are watering places that release no one who will not battle.”

She said, “Can there be patience—may I be rid of you, ravager!—

under a thrust that snaps necklaces apart?

    تَضيقُ به أَوقاتُه وَالمَقاصدُ

    This spear of yours is a scourge among spears;

its times and its targets are too narrow for it.”

    فَلا بأسَ إِن ضاقَت عليه المَوارِدُ

    I said, “Bear it a while, and endure;

there is no harm if the watering places are too narrow for it.”

She said, “Then do not thrust so much; go slowly,

and leave me a little while to ward off what I suffer.

For a little love is sound in reason’s eyes,

while much love, through folly, is ruinous.”

    ولكنَّ طبعَ النَفس للنَفسِ قائدُ

    So I treated her gently, and gentleness is my way;

but the soul’s own nature guides the soul.

Now I would appease her, now I would tame her,

now draw close to her, now draw away,

until matters with her eased, and smoother became

her passages, while neck and arm entwined.

She spent the night thrusting skillfully beneath me, and came to

clash with a spear that solid rocks would shun.

She helped me through one engulfing surge after another,

a strong swimmer, with witnesses from herself against herself.

She swayed in measure with the thrusting, as though

her joints beneath the spears were swivel-pins.

She said, “May you be rewarded with good! Do you know

that, by my life, you are forever in my heart,

and that the blood you made flow takes pride in you,

and that a heart you frightened is grateful to you?”
