Rise, bring her, like a fire fed with fuel,

blazing with light on nights of good fortune.

And unveil her, a virgin who has set dancing

her drinking companions, though they sit about her,

and stolen their wits through drunkenness,

while they witness what she has done.

    فهل أَتى القومَ حَديثُ الجنود

    Her troops are joys at the meeting;

so have tidings of the troops reached the company?

They have made her wine-jar their direction of prayer,

so around her they stand and prostrate themselves.

As though she were a ruby in the cup,

melted by fierce heat after being solid.

Whenever her mouth parts in a smile, she is

unveiled before her suitors, adorned with necklaces.

    تَشابَهت منها ومنه الخُدود

    A supple youth with sweet, dusky lips passes her round;

her cheeks and his resemble one another.

He does not blend the wine, when he pours her

into the cup, except with the cool moisture of his dusky lips.

Had she not grown sweet when mixed with moisture from his mouth,

lovers would find no sweetness in coming to drink her.

He has no fault, save that he

does not keep his pledge and forgets his promises.

Or a graceful maiden, slender-waisted and shapely,

whose figure has borne breasts as its fruit.

When her palm unveils her wine,

she grants you union and banishes estrangement.

    In a lush, dew-moistened garden

that spreads the roses' cheeks before the companions,

    lightning smiled across its reaches,

and thunder laughed aloud along its two edges.

Then the gray doves sang on its leafy trees,

and the branches swayed their slender forms.

As though its gray dove were a songstress

who had plucked the strings, with the branch as a lute.

So hasten to pleasures while their time is here,

for what has passed, my friend, never returns.

Do you not see that its Nowruz has come,

swaying in cloaks of the hills' brocade,

and made the flowers laugh in its garden,

and awakened the birds from slumber,

and embroidered the garden with its colors

beautifully, and revived the earth after its dormancy,

and from its brocade clothed the horizons

in bordered cloaks of green and white and black?

And dawn has unveiled a brow,

radiant, from which all existence shines,

as though, when it appeared unveiled,

it were Husayn's face as he receives delegations.

The illustrious lord, to whom have submitted

    all people, whether master or subject;

and the pure-born, noble one whose

    forefathers have been declared pure by the text;

and he who keeps his pledge when it is forgotten

among the people's nobles that pledges must be kept.

How many a generous deed of his bounty we recount—

a wondrous grace that none can deny!

And the story of the deputy's scheming

is among the clearest witnesses to his lofty rank.

May you ever be victorious, Abu Nasir,

over every foe and obstinate envier.

And may you forever enjoy a blessing

so envied that it rends the envier's heart.

And take down this radiant, well-strung poem,

    like a necklace at a graceful, long-necked beauty's throat.

It has come to congratulate you on victory over

an implacable hater, from a loving, devoted friend.

So remain rejoicing throughout the days

in glory whose good fortune keeps ascending,

as long as a woodland dove sings in the garden

and the camel-driver chants in the valley of Zarud.
