سَقىmay water اللَّهُGod أَيّامَناour days بالحِجازin the Hijaz
ولاand may not جازَهاpass them by الغيدقُthe copious rain الهاطلُpouring down
May God water our days in the Hijaz,
And may the copious downpour never pass them by.
فَماfor how كانَwas أَرغدَblissful عيشيmy life بهاin them
إِذwhen المنزلُthe dwelling القفرُdesolate بيby me آهلُinhabited
For how blissful my life was in those days,
When the desolate dwelling was peopled by my presence.
لَقَدindeed طالَhas lasted long وَجديmy yearning وَذِكريand my remembrance لَهاfor them
وَلَيسَand there is no لماfor what قدalready مَضىhas passed طائِلُbenefit
Indeed, my yearning and remembrance of them have lasted long,
Yet there is no profit in what has passed.
فَياso, oh لهفَanguish نَفسيmy soul لهfor it ماضياًgone by
ترحَّلdeparted وَالوَجدُwhile yearning بيwithin me نازلُlodging
Ah, my soul's anguish for it, now gone!
It departed, while yearning dwells within me.
تَرىdo you think منthe one who غَراميmy passion بهfor him دائِمٌenduring
وَحاليَand my state مِنfrom فقدهlosing him حائِلُaltered
Do you think the one for whom my passion endures—
While my state is altered by losing him—
درىhas learned أَنَّthat وَجديmy yearning بهfor him لاnot يَزولfades away
وَصَبريَand my patience منfrom بعدهafter him زائِلُfading away
Has learned that my yearning for him does not fade,
And that my patience since his departure is fading?
يَقولونthey say ليto me إِنَّهthat he خاذِلٌa deserter
وَخَيرُand the finest الظِباgazelles الشادِنُthe young gazelle الخاذِلُthat leaves the herd
They tell me that he is a deserter;
Yet the finest of gazelles is the young one that deserts the herd.
أَتعذلُنيdo you reproach me جاهِلاًignorant of حالَهhis state
لكto you الوَيلُwoe ياO أَيُّهاyou العاذلُreproacher
Do you reproach me, ignorant of his state?
Woe to you, O reproacher!
تجيبُanswers الصَفاةُthe smooth rock وَلَيسَbut does not يُجيبanswer
وَدَمعيand my tears علىupon وَجنَتيmy cheek سائِلُflowing
The smooth rock answers, but he does not,
While my tears stream down my cheek.
