فاِحفظso guard فؤادَكyour heart إِنif رَنَتgazed غزلانُهُits gazelles
That is the Hijaz, and these are its dunes.
That is Al-Hejaz and its sand dunes
So guard your heart if its gazelles gaze upon you.
So guard your heart if its gazelles cry
واِسفَحand pour out دموعَكyour tears إِنif مررتَyou passed بسفحهby its slope
شغفاًout of ardent love بهfor it إِنَّindeed الدموعَthe tears جمانُهُits pearls
And pour out your tears if you pass by its slope,
And let your tears flow if you pass its plains
Out of ardent love for it: tears are its pearls.
Yearning for it, for tears are its gems
وَسلِand ask المنازلَthe dwellings عنabout هوىًa love قضّيتَهyou lived it out
هلwill عائدٌreturning ذاكَthat الهوىlove وزمانُهُand its time
And ask the dwellings about a love you once lived:
Ask the dwellings about a love you once had
Will that love and its time return?
Did that love and its time return?
لَهفيmy sorrow! علىfor ذاكthat الزَمانِtime وأَهلهِand its people
وَسَقاهُand may it water it منfrom صَوبthe downpour الحَياof rain هتّانُهُits copious showers
Alas for that time and its people!
My craving for that time and its people
And may the rain's copious showers water it,
When bonds of union tied us
إِذwhen كانَwas حبلُthe cord الوصلof union متّصلاًconnected بناto us
وَالعيشُand life مورقةٌleafy بهin it أَغصانُهُits branches
When the cord of union was tied to us,
And life was verdant with its branches
And life's branches were leafy then;
When covenants shone with purpose

And when the familiar haunts shone with hopes,
And plains echoed though none lived there
And the slope was a dwelling whose inhabitants had not departed.
My blamer! My heart and love plea
ياO عاذليَّmy two reproachers دَعاleave, you two فؤاديmy heart والجَوىand burning anguish
لاdo not تعذُلاهyou two reproach it فإنَّهfor it is دَيدانُهُits constant habit
O my two reproachers, leave my heart and its anguish alone.
Do not blame them, for they are its worms
Do not reproach it, for anguish is its habit.
Have mercy on a lovelorn cast
وارحمتاah, pity! لمتيَّمٍfor one enslaved by love قذفَتflung away بهhim

أَيديthe hands النوىof separation وَتباعدَتand grew distant أَوطانُهُhis homelands
Ah, pity for a man enslaved by love, flung away by
By the hands of separation to distant lands
The hands of separation, while his homelands grew distant.

A breeze blew toward him from the direction of Najd,
Its ardour, igniting his sorrows
So its blowing increased his sorrows.
He wakes and sleeps to heartache

تَبكيweep عليهfor him منbecause of الضَنىwasting sickness أَخدانُهُhis close companions
He passes evening and morning aching from separation;
His two cheek tear ducts crying for him
His companions weep for him because of his wasting sickness.
When reminded of his Hejazi days
ماnot إِنever (emphatic) تذكَّرhe recalled بالحجازin the Hijaz زمانَهُhis time
إلّاexcept وشبَّتand blazed up فيin الحشاthe breast نيرانُهُhis fires
Never does he recall his time in the Hijaz
Fires sparked amidst the brushwood
Without his fires flaring up within his breast.
He quenched Al-Hejaz and the beloved land
فسَقىso may it water الحجازَthe Hijaz ومنand those بذيّاكَin that الحِمىsanctuary

So may the Hijaz, and those within that sanctuary, be watered
With copious tears pouring forth
By a downpour of tears, flowing in torrents.
The weeping eye sheds limitless tears
لاmay not كفَّcease للدَمعfor the tears الهتونstreaming تَقاطرٌfalling in drops

May streaming tears never cease to fall
After Al-Hejaz, no solace for his lids
After leaving the Hijaz, nor may his eyelids dry.
