Rise, bring it, while dawn's sword glides forth.

A tawny wine from which morning's radiance breaks forth.

You cannot tell, when you come upon it: is it its hue

That gleams, or the cupbearer's cheek, or twilight's glow?

As though in the darkness it were a sun shining for us,

So darkness retreats before the brilliance of its light.

It cast upon morning a light from its rays,

So the horizon blushed with shame at its light.

    فَيَستَحيلُ حَباباً فوقها العَرقُ

    A virgin, she lowers her gaze, shy before whoever touches her;

So sweat turns to bubbles on her surface.

When a goblet appears to us from its horizon,

Eyes encircle its rims like a girdle.

And if its mixer reveals it without dilution,

He nearly burns from the blaze of its brilliance.

    حسبتَها البرقَ في الظَلماءِ يأتلقُ

    You take it for twilight's glow, until it flashes;

Then you think it lightning gleaming in the darkness.

From the hand of a supple youth whose anklet is tight

When he sways, and its bells are restless.

He passes it round, swaying with delight in it,

As though fear had shaken him in alarm.

In his cheek, his face, and his smiling mouth

Are fire, light, and blossoms whose fragrance is sweet.

The radiance of his brow dispels the darkness of his locks,

As though daybreak had burst through his buttons [uncertain reading].

You see the drinking companions drunk when you look at him,

As though they had drunk his gaze's heady wine at evening.

He lowers a naturally kohl-dark eye, lined with magic,

Drowsy, untroubled by sleeplessness or insomnia.

    بدرٌ ولكنَّه بالتِبر مُنتطِقُ

    A gazelle, yet draped in pearls;

A full moon, yet girdled with gold.

His perfume's fragrance grows sweeter whenever it wafts,

Like musk, which grows more fragrant when inhaled.

How many utterances his reproaches brought forth,

As though they were pearls gathered in ordered array.

So our spiteful foe wished that deafness would strike him,

As he spent the night nearby, listening furtively.
