And when we met at al-Ghuwayr one evening,

and both the yearning lover and the one who stirred longing gained what they hoped for,

he whom I love smiled, and I said to my companion:

"I have attained my wishes: here are al-ʿUdhayb and Bāriq."

And he shone forth, and dawn said, "This is my radiance."

Does this dawn lie, when dawn is truthful?

And he gave off fragrance, and the garden said, "He wafts my scent."

And have gardens ever breathed forth musk?

And he swayed, and the spear said, "Those are my curves."

When have anemones bloomed atop spears?

And he spoke words that pearls thought were their own ordered string.

And has any speaker uttered strung pearls?

And he let fall luxuriant hair whose color deceived the night.

And how can a pitch-black hue have hair partings?

And he revealed glances that the gazelle swore were

its own glances, were it not for the piercing arrows.

And all of them came close to mirroring his likeness,

but he whom I love surpasses them all.
