وربَّand many a ساقٍcupbearer قلبُهhis heart قَلبهhis reversal ('cupbearer' reversed gives 'cruel' in Arabic)
وربَّ ساقٍ قلبُه قَلبه
أَفديهI would ransom him منas a قاسٍcruel one ومنand as a ساقِcupbearer
أَفديه من قاسٍ ومن ساقِ
And many a cupbearer whose heart is his name reversed;
By the Lord of the ankles whose heart is his heart
I would ransom him, cruel one and cupbearer that he is.
I ransom him from the harsh and the ankles
تحاربَfought one another العشّاقthe lovers فيover حُسنهhis beauty
تحاربَ العشّاق في حُسنه
وَقامَتand stood الحَربُwar علىupon ساقِa leg
وَقامَت الحَربُ على ساقِ
The lovers fought one another over his beauty,
The lovers fight over his beauty
And war stood upon a leg.
And war wages over the ankles
