Ah, by the garden’s smile revealing the blossoms’ pearly gleam,

and by the horizon’s face brightening to reveal dawn’s radiant brow,

and by lavender’s fragrance, which wafted in the folds of a breeze

that drifted by night from the hills of Salʿ, Taybah, and al-Hijr,

and by lightning that coursed at night along Hajir’s outskirts,

and so renewed in me a longing for the mouth’s bright flash,

and by the cooing of the grove’s doves among its branch-tips,

as the branches sway with them in robes of green,

indeed, the memory of Ramah’s gazelles stirred my longing,

and remembrance’s searing ache kindled its fire in my heart.

So I spent the night with a heart that, whenever a bird lamented,

sent sparks of glowing embers flying from its breaths,

and with tears from an eye whose lids never dried:

whenever a woodland dove called, they came flowing.

I watch a darkness whose gloom never changes,

and night’s stars, which neither move nor make their nightly journey.

    فَيا حاجِراً سَقياً لعَصركَ من عَصرِ

    And I yearn for a time gone by at Hajir;

so, O Hajir, may rain bless your time—what a time it was!

When life was fresh and youth was in bloom,

    I swayed in it like a branch amid fresh leaves;

nights when I would not settle for wishes in place of union,

nor sip sorrow’s cups with patience.
