And I brought her forth on Mecca's pebbled plain, after

The caller cried out for prayer and entered the night.

Her radiance lit the environs of al-Hajun,

And shone between al-Ma'zamayn and Zamzam.

And when a waft of her perfume reached the caravan,

Their camel-driver sang for her and chanted.

The pilgrims beheld her face as they journeyed by night,

So they sought her dwelling, cried 'Labbayk,' and entered ihram.

A maiden: she is the radiant sun at midmorning,

Yet she appears when the night grows dark.

The bough learned from her the curve of her figure,

And how fitting it was for the bough to learn!

    وَلَو أَسفرت للصُبح يَوماً تلثَّما

    Dawn shone in her stead when she veiled herself;

And had she unveiled herself to dawn one day, it would have veiled itself.

Whenever she casts a glance and sways with supple grace,

What then is al-Jar'a's gazelle, and what the ban-tree of the preserve?

She appeared far off, so the devout man cried, 'God is greatest!'

And she appeared close by, so he invoked blessings and peace.

How often, by turning away, she made the killing of love's devotee lawful,

Though he deemed killing by rejection forbidden.

And she thought my heart empty, so she cast into it

A passion that made my sickness more grievous and severe.

And had she spared me, I could have borne it,

But she left neither flesh nor blood.
