إِذاif أَصبَحتَyou become ذاpossessed of طَرَبٍmerriment وَلَهوٍand diversion
إِذا أَصبَحتَ ذا طَرَبٍ وَلَهوٍ
تُعاقرُyou habitually indulge in راحةًease أَوor شربdrinking راحِwine
تُعاقرُ راحةً أَو شرب راحِ
If you become given over to rapture and diversion,
If you are given to merriment and diversion,
indulging in ease or in drinking wine,
Habitually indulging in ease or drinking wine,
فَقُلthen say ليto me كَيفَhow تَرجوyou hope for الرُشدَright guidance يَوماًone day
فَقُل لي كَيفَ تَرجو الرُشدَ يَوماً
وَماand there is not لكَfor you عنaway from ضَلالكَyour waywardness مِنany بَراحِdeparture
وَما لكَ عن ضَلالكَ مِن بَراحِ
then tell me: how can you hope one day for right guidance,
Then tell me: how can you hope for right guidance one day,
when you have no release from your misguidance?
When you never depart from your waywardness?
