دَعاهُyou two, leave him علىto سَهلease الغَرامlove وَصَعبهِand its hardship
فماذاso what عليكمon you إِنif أَضَرَّhe does harm بِقَلبِهِto his heart
Leave him to love’s ease and hardship.
He called him to the easy and difficult terrains of passion
So what is it to you if he harms his own heart?
So what blame lies on him if it harmed his heart?
أَقِلّاyou two, ease up عليهon him فيin المَلامreproach فإنَّهfor he
يَرىhe sees الموتَdeath أَصفىpurer منthan كدورةthe murkiness of خَطبِهِhis plight
Be gentler in reproaching him, for he
Reproach him little for the blame, for he
Sees death as purer than the murk of his plight.
Sees death purer than the misfortune of his love
وَلَيسَand is not بمُجدٍof any use ياO خَليليَّmy two dear friends لومُهreproaching him
فإنَّfor indeed الهوىpassion قدalready سيطَwas mingled منهof him بلُبِّهِwith his core
And reproaching him is useless, my two dear friends,
It is no glory, my friend, to blame him
For passion has been stirred into his very core.
Since passion has seized him by the heart
وَلَوand if ذُقتُماyou both tasted ماwhat ذاقَhe tasted منof لاعجthe searing heat of الهوىpassion
لأَيقنتُماyou both would surely know أَنَّthat العذابَtorment بعَذبِهِin its sweetness
And had you both tasted what he tasted of passion’s searing heat,
If you both tasted what he tasted of love's torment
You would know for certain that torment lies in its sweetness.
You would know that the sweetness itself is agonizing
يَبيتُhe spends the night علىon جَمرthe embers of الغَرامlove وَيَنطويand folds inward
وَتصبيهand makes him yearn ذكرىthe memory of غورِthe lowland of سَلعٍSalʿ ومَنand those بهِin it
He spends the night on love’s embers and folds inward,
He spends the night on passion's embers and wraps
And the memory of Salʿ’s lowland and those there stirs his longing.
Himself while the memory of Sala's ruins and its people haunt him
يحنُّhe yearns إلىfor أَوطانِهhis homelands ثمّthen يَنثَنيhe bends
علىover قَلبهhis heart كيso that لاnot يَذوبَit melts بكَربهِfrom his anguish
He yearns for his homelands, then bends
He yearns for his homelands then folds
Over his heart, lest it melt from his anguish.
Upon his heart so it would not melt in anguish
وإِنand if لاحَappears منfrom نَجدٍNajd وميضٌa gleam توقَّدتblazes
بأَحشائهwithin his entrails نارُthe fire of الغَرامlove وجَنبهِand his side
And if a gleam appears from Najd, there blazes
And if a glimpse sparked from Nejd its fire ignited
Within his entrails and his side the fire of love.
In his entrails the flames of passion and its fervor
وَلَيسَand there is no لهfor him عنaway from منهجthe path of الحبِّlove منهجٌpath
وَكَيفَand how وَمهماand whenever أومضَflashes البَرقُlightning يُصبِهِmakes him yearn
And he has no path away from the path of love.
He has no path but the course of love
And how could he find one, when every flash of lightning stirs his longing?
And how could he when lightning flashes to pour upon him
