تؤمُّ منىً والنافِراتِ ضُحى النَفرِ
And I swear by the mature camels snorting at their nose-rings,
I swear by the swelling waves of the seas,
bound for Mina, and by those departing in the forenoon of departure:
Rushing towards me, receding at dawn,
فَماso no لجَّةdeep waters of الدأماءِthe sea يوماًever تَقاذَفَتtossed about
فَما لجَّة الدأماءِ يوماً تَقاذَفَت
بهاwith it عاصفٌa raging wind نَكباءُblowing obliquely فيalong شاطئthe shore of البحرِthe sea
بها عاصفٌ نَكباءُ في شاطئ البحرِ
No deep waters of the sea, ever tossed
Never have the sands by the shore been so tossed
by a raging crosswind along the seashore,
By raging winds on a stormy morn,
بأَكثرَany more منthan قَلبيmy heart اِضطراباًin turbulence وَلَمand has not تَعِثwreaked havoc
بأَكثرَ من قَلبي اِضطراباً وَلَم تَعِث

يدُ الدَهر فينا بَل حذار يد الدَهرِ
are more turbulent than my heart; and no havoc has been wrought
As my heart is troubled and vexed inside,
upon us by Time’s hand—rather, I dread Time’s hand.
Not by time's hand, but fate's blows so fierce.
