أَحبّايَmy beloved ones ليfor me فيin كُلِّevery يومday وَلَيلَةٍand night
بذكراكمby remembering you نارٌa fire منof الشوقlonging تَسعرُblazes
My beloved ones, every day and night I have
My loves, in every day and night
a fire of longing that blazes at the thought of you.
With your memory a fire of longing burns within me
إذاwhen ماemphatic particle رأَيتُI see الصُبحَthe dawn وَالبَدرُand the full moon طالِعٌrising
ذكرتكمُI remember you والشيءُand one thing بالشيءِthrough another thing يُذكرُis recalled
Whenever I see the dawn while the full moon is rising,
When I see the dawn and the rising moon
I remember you; one thing calls another to mind.
I remember you, for things remind one of their like
فَياso, O حَسرَتاmy sorrow كَمhow much ليfor me عَلىbecause of البُعدdistance والنوىand separation
حنينٌyearning وَوَجدٌand passion دائمٌunceasing وتحسُّرُand regret
Alas, my sorrow! How much I suffer from distance and separation—
Oh what sorrow! How I long for you from afar
yearning, unceasing passion, and regret!
Yearning and constant torment and regret
يلومونَنيthey blame me أَنthat همتُI became love-mad وَجداًwith longing بحبِّكمin loving you
كأَنَّas though هُياميmy love-madness فيin المَحبَّةlove مُنكرُreprehensible
They blame me for being mad with longing in my love for you,
They blame me for pining in love for you
as though my madness in love were reprehensible.
As if my passion were something unsightly
وَلَوand if كابَدواthey endured وجدَanguish الصَبابَةardent love أَيقَنواthey would be certain
بأَنّيthat I am علىfor فرطexcess الكآبةdespondency أعذرُmore deserving of excuse
Yet if they endured the anguish of ardent love, they would know
Had they felt the torment of youthful love
that I am more deserving of excuse for my excessive sorrow.
They would know I am excused for my misery
أُلامُI am blamed عَلىfor ماwhat لاnot أُطيقُI can bear وإنَّماbut only
يُلامُis blamed الفَتىa young man فيماfor what يُطيقhe can bear وَيَقدِرُand he is able
I am blamed for what lies beyond my power, yet only
I am blamed for what I cannot bear, yet
for what lies within his capacity and power should a man be blamed.
A man is blamed for what he can, not what he cannot
إِذاwhen قُلتُI say للقَلبto the heart اِصطَبِرendure patiently لِفراقِهمat separation from them
فإنَّfor indeed جَميلَgracious الصَبرpatience بالحُرِّfor a noble man أَجدَرُmore fitting
When I tell my heart, “Bear separation from them patiently,
When I say to my heart, be patient with their absence
for gracious patience better befits a noble man,”
For patience with torment is most excellent
يَقولit says اِستعِرborrow قَلباًa heart سوايَother than me وقلand say لهto it
ليصبِرlet it be patient فإنّيfor I عنهمapart from them لَستُI am not أَصبرُI endure
it says, “Borrow a heart other than me, and tell it
It says, borrow another heart like mine, and say to it
to be patient, for I cannot endure being apart from them.”
"Be patient," for I cannot be patient without them
