خَليليَّmy two friends هَلwill ...? عَهديmy days بمكّةَin Mecca راجعُreturning
فَقَدfor indeed قُليَتhave been loathed بالهندin India منّيby me المضاجعُthe beds
My two friends, will my days in Mecca return?
My beloved, will I return to Mecca?
For I have come to loathe the beds in India.
For my bed has been made cold in India,
وَهَلand is there ...? شربةٌa draught منof ماءwater زَمزمَZamzam تَرتَويhas its thirst quenched
بهاwith it كبِدٌa liver قدindeed أَظمأتهاhave made it thirsty الوقائعُthe calamities
And is there a draught of Zamzam water to quench
And will I drink a sip of the water of Zamzam,
a liver that calamities have parched?
To quench the thirst of my parched liver?
وَهَلand is ...? عامِرٌinhabited ربعُthe abode الهوىof love بسويقَةٍin Suwayqa
فَعَهديfor my recollection بذاكَof that الربعthe abode للشَملfor the company جامعُbringing together
And is love's abode in Suwayqa still inhabited?
Is the abode of love still inhabited in Suwaqah?
For I recall that abode bringing our company together.
For that abode was the gatherer of our kin,
وَهَلand will ...? منany صفاserenity منfrom سالفbygone العيشlife بالصَفاat al-Safa
يَعودُreturn لناto us يوماًone day فَتَصفوso become clear المشارِعُthe watering places
And will any serenity from bygone life at al-Safa
Will we ever return to the pure living of past days in Safa,
return to us one day, so the watering places grow clear?
Where the streets were once traveled joyfully?
سَقىmay ... water اللَهGod ماwhat بينَbetween الحجونal-Hajun إِلىto الصَفاal-Safa
مرابعَabodes فيهاin them للظِباءfor the gazelles مراتِعُgrazing grounds
May God water all that lies between al-Hajun and al-Safa—
May God water the land between Hijoun and Safa,
abodes where gazelles have grazing grounds.
Grazing grounds where the deer freely wander,
وَجادَand may He shower rain بأَجيادٍin Ajyad منازلhomes جيرَةٍof neighbors
بهنَّin them حمامُthe doves الأَبطَحينof al-Abtahayn (the two gravelly valleys) سواجعُcooing
And may He shower rain on neighbors' homes in Ajyad,
And may its courtyards host the cooing wild doves,
where the doves of al-Abtahayn coo.
Who take shelter on the hillsides.
وَحيّاand may ... greet الحَياthe rain بالمأزمينat al-Ma'zimayn (the two passes) معاهِداًold haunts
فَماfor ... not عَهدُهاtheir memory عِنديwith me مَدىthroughout الدَهرall time ضائعُlost
And may the rain greet old haunts at al-Ma'zimayn,
Greet the living, making pacts with past friends,
for their memory will never be lost to me, as long as time endures.
For the days of their memory will never be lost.
