My lord, I have neither patience nor endurance.

Grant me union; otherwise let me first die of hardship.

Love for you, through estrangement, has deepened my infatuation.

And my eye's tears have dried up from weeping.

A tearful eye is enough for you in love—and it suffices.

Be gentle, for my patience with you has run out.

And in loving you, I heeded no one who reproached me out of envy.

I would ransom him, a gazelle to whom the heart clings.

He enchants our minds when he speaks.

His beauty is a temptation for whoever loves passionately.

So tell the one who reproaches me over him, when he appears:

God did not create this beauty in vain—behold!

He reaches up like a gazelle and bends like a branch.

And his hair's parting, like guidance, grows in radiance.

And his hair is the root of infatuation for those beguiled by him.

What hair you have—through it even guidance goes astray!

You have never met his equal in beauty—not at all.

His brow is like the crescent moon when unveiled.

And his figure is like a slender branch when he sways.

And his glance is a cutting sword, unsheathed against us.

He kills with a glance whoever comes seeking him.

And how many martyrs have been slain for him in love!

A prince of beauty, whose commands hold sway

Among us—and his glances are his cutting swords.

And the lashes of his eyelids are his armies.

For him the banner of beauty has been tied.

And all have borne witness to his beauty's sovereignty: that no...
