May I lose my patience at parting’s dawn, or my fortitude,
My patience ran out the morning we parted, or perhaps my endurance
if anyone but her has ever crossed my mind.
Whether a day other than it has passed in my mind

Slender-waisted, supple in her curves, yet hard-hearted;
Gentle of movement yet harsh is Haiifa
my hope of her never ends, nor does my life’s span.
My hope in her does not end nor my outstretched hand

Wondrous in beauty—how close she once was!
Beautiful of form - how close she had been!
Unattainable in love, she pays heed to no one.
Distant now of visit - she turns not to anyone

She was formed, O describer, from a bough
Qualities, O brother, gathered as from a branch
and a gazelle of the covert, combined as one.
And from a shy gazelle in unified collection

Her figure is a bān-tree bough’s when she bends,
Her figure is like a slim staff if she turns
and her neck a startled, fleeing gazelle’s.
Her cheek the cheek of a shying, fleeing gazelle

Her eye is kohled with the languor of coquetry;
With the languor of half-open narcissi are her eyes lined
far be it from me to say it was lately inflamed.
I speak not of one newly healed of rheum

Her sidelock is ornamented, though no pen has touched her;
Adorned are her temples untouched by a pen
her teeth are neatly strung, but not by any hand.
Patterned her mouth though not by a hand

Her smiles now disclose something of coolness

Relief from her piercing glances on the necklace beads

If told "Die tomorrow for love of her"
and that would please her, I would die before tomorrow.
And that her wish - I'd die before tomorrow

But for the night-darkness of her hair, so far extended,
Were it not for the darkness of her hair prolonging the distance
I would not spend the night complaining to her of my sleeplessness or grief.
I would not complain of my wakefulness or my rising

We seemed one to the eye—you would think us one,
As if we were one in the eye's sight
so deep our intimacy—or two souls in one body.
So strong the harmony, or two spirits in one body
