Their fire, with sharp tongues.

على الشيء الملفف بالنجاد

You see them among the greediest of people

For the thing wrapped in the sword-belt;

فيدخرونه قوتا وزاداً

So they hoard it as sustenance and provisions

Until the Day of Resurrection and Mutual Calling.

Their guest spends the night famished, with an empty belly,

And lying upon the thorns of the qatad bush.

They deem generosity a defect and humiliation,

And miserliness one of the traits of the noble.

فاكرمهم وانداهم بغاث

جماد في جماد في جماد

So their noblest and most open-handed are lowly birds—

Lifeless matter within lifeless matter within lifeless matter.
