    Pass round, O full-moon face,

a sun for us until dawn.

And stand right among drinking companions

who, with it, are like radiant stars.

And renew our mirth in bliss

    upon carpets of flowers.

And do not turn aside to Zayd,

    nor incline toward ʿAmr.

For I cherish a passion for it,

    longstanding—and passion is my excuse.

    Wine whose mixing has revealed

to us a cup of pearl.

With it a cupbearer hastens to us,

fair of cheek and bright of teeth.

And a young beauty, in her swaying,

puts the dune-grown boughs to shame.

She has a beauty mark like musk above

    ruby upon pearl,

and a glance from the sons of ʿAbs,

and a face from the sons of Badr—

one of the fair ones who rise tall

    with figures like dusky spears.

So rise, my friend: a call has come

from dawn's herald with glad tidings.

    And melodies have been sung

for us on a bough by the turtledove.

    And rainclouds have adorned

    the garden's plants with raindrops.

So kindly keep faith, and be generous,

and shield my hearing from excuses.

And win the cup and cupbearer,

and seek refuge with the sun and full moon.

And if you fear a sin,

    then God's kindness is

    immense; forgiving, He wipes away

grievous sin and the burden of guilt.
