I complain to Time of petty, wicked folk,

who see error as a path to right guidance.

Base men, who lash you when you make your way by night

toward their fire, with cutting tongues.

You see them among the greediest of men

for the thing wrapped in the sword-belt.

So they hoard it as food and provisions

until the Day of Resurrection and mutual calling.

Their guest spends the night famished, empty-bellied,

and lying upon the thorns of the tragacanth shrub.

They deem generosity a failing and a humiliation,

and miserliness a trait of noble men.

So their noblest and most generous are lowly birds—

lifeless matter within lifeless matter within lifeless matter.
