    Disregard the one who blamed and counseled me about him;

indeed, my heart has not sobered from loving him.

One far away, since he departed, has left me

a tearful eye that has not run dry since his departure.

He was generous with estrangement, yet

he granted me no union with him.

As for me, even if his estrangement tormented me,

my heart, in love, would not depart from him.

    Beauty wrote upon his cheek—

what a line, with all that it revealed!

I do not forget him, so enamored of it,

moving through the darkness and making the goblet gleam.

    واعتراه منه نقص ومحا

    Time saw him and hid its light;

because of him, waning overtook it and effaced it.

Bewildered, I could not tell: had a branch appeared,

or a crescent bearing the midmorning sun?

How delightful to drink at evening from his hair,

and drink it in the morning from his mouth:

a wine pressed in a time of joy,

    dispelling sorrow and preserving delight.

It grew fragrant when its seal was broken,

and its scent wafted from the wine jar.

A slender youth with sweet, dusky lips beholds it,

perfect in every quality, offering pleasantries.

My two friends, give it to me to drink at midmorning,

and flourish in life's shade, and make merry.

And when it is unveiled to me under its own name,

Kindle [it] among the cupbearers, and cry out!

then learn its qualities from me,

and ask me, and make requests of me.

I see no substitute for it in revelry—

no, nor has my heart sobered from intoxication.
