    May I lose my patience at parting’s dawn, or my fortitude,

    if anyone but her has ever crossed my mind.

    لا ينقضي املي منها ولا امدي

    Slender-waisted, supple in her curves, yet hard-hearted;

    my hope of her never ends, nor does my life’s span.

    Wondrous in beauty—how close she once was!

    Unattainable in love, she pays heed to no one.

    She was formed, O describer, from a bough

    and a gazelle of the covert, combined as one.

    Her figure is a bān-tree bough’s when she bends,

    and her neck a startled, fleeing gazelle’s.

    حاشا اقول قريب العهد من رمد

    Her eye is kohled with the languor of coquetry;

    far be it from me to say it was lately inflamed.

    Her glance has dark-eyed beauty—what beauty!

    Her neck has graceful suppleness—what suppleness!

    منظم ثغرها لكن بغير يد

    Her sidelock is ornamented, though no pen has touched her;

    her teeth are neatly strung, but not by any hand.

    Ah, how my heart burns for that sweet saliva, while

    her smiling lips now part to reveal hailstones!

    Alas for what I suffer in love, and what

    has befallen me from her glance, which blows upon knots!

    Were I told, “Die tomorrow, obedient to love for her,”

    and that would please her, I would die before tomorrow.

    But for the night-darkness of her hair, so far extended,

    I would not spend the night complaining to her of my sleeplessness or grief.

    Passion led me to her as a captive is led—so is there

    anyone to take my hand in love, or exact retribution for me?

    فانما سال ذاك الدمع من كبدي

    Do not find my tears strange if they flow black;

    for those tears have flowed from my liver alone.

    I have not forgotten a night she spent embracing me

    until morning, with my upper arm as her pillow.

    We seemed one to the eye—you would think us one,

    so deep our intimacy—or two souls in one body.
